Letter from the Founder
The essence of philanthropy lights up my world! I once came upon a phrase that forms the
the Fort Foundation; the French phrase 'Noblesse oblige' literally means 'Nobility obligates'.
The phrase denotes the concept that nobility extends beyond mere entitlements and requires the
person who holds such a status to fulfill social responsibilities. This means, whoever claims to
noble must conduct himself nobly. I couldn't agree more.
In ethical discussion, 'Noblesse oblige' is sometimes used to summarize a moral economy wherein privilege must be balanced by duty towards those who lack such privilege or who cannot perform such duty. Recently, it has been used primarily to refer to public responsibilities of the rich, famous and powerful, notably to provide good examples of behavior or to exceed minimal standards of decency. So then what exactly is privilege? To me, the gift of having a home, running water, electricity, food, education, quality healthcare, family...the list goes on. These are all privileges, as reports show an estimated 766 million people lived in abject poverty across the globe in 2013.
The Fort Foundation is collaborating with partners globally to solve some major challenges in Ghana's healthcare sector, it seeks to: establish a rotating emergency healthcare fund to support the less fortunate, and develop the infrastructure and interior of healthcare facilities nationwide to improve the overall healthcare experience. Every year, many children and adults die in Ghana due to lack of funds as little as $1 to fund their medical needs.
We believe quality healthcare is a necessity, and lack of funds should not prevent people from making the most of their lives, or from having life at all. Each year, we fund innovative ideas that provide timely intervention to families; renovate health centers into wellness spaces, purchase new equipment for selected hospitals to treat deadly diseases, and forge strategic partnerships to develop impactful collaborations.
The Fort Foundation is truly 'pioneering a noble cause' and bringing noble personalities on board to fuel the change we hope to see. I am confident, by committing to our cause, we will help millions of Ghanaians to get the chance to live a healthy, productive life.
